Late last year, New South Wales Minister for Environment and Climate Change, The Hon. Frank Sartor, released a new strategy paper aimed at increasing resource recovery throughout the state. The Strategy paper outlines current waste trends and reports that in NSW alone, approximately 23% of recyclables are leaked into the general waste stream.
With the 2014 target recycling rate for the municipal sector set at 66% and the Commercial and Industrial (C&I) sector at 63%, NSW is currently tracking at a rate of 44% and 52% respectively. Other states through their environmental agencies such as Sustainability Victoria, agree that the recycling leakage is approximately the same as in New South Wales.
In response to the newly released strategy, SULO has developed a number of solutions that could assist n reducing leakage rates of recyclables and increase overall resource recovery levels across several sectors, helping to achieve individual and national waste targets.
These solutions include the new 360 Litre Kompakt bin which is designed for domestic applications and provides residents with increased capacity to recycle whilst maintaining a small footprint, similar to that of the 240 litre bin, without the need to increase the collection frequency and hence reduce potential emissions.
SULO’s solutions include:

CITY OF MELVILLE RECYCLING TRIAL
The City of Melville is conducting Western Australia’s very first trial using 360 Litre Recycling Bins. With industry reports indentifying that the average household waste bin contains over 20% recyclable material, the City of Melville are conducting a trial to determine if this leakage is a result of bin capacity. 630 households were identified by Council to take part in the 16 week trial that commenced in December 2010. The main aims of the trial identified by Mayor Russell Aubrey at Councils official launch are “to reduce landfill waste, increase recycling, change the way people dispose of household waste, and manage waste removal in a cost effective manner. ” Click here for more information. |
AN INTRODUCTION TO ORGANICS
Australian's are estimate d to be generating almost three million tonnes of food waste on an annual basis, that's equivalent to 136 kilo's per person per year. The recently released Waste Avoidance and Resource Recovery strategy states that on average, organic waste makes up 51% of the normal red lidded residual bin. This means that 50% of waste currently going to landfill could be recycled and reprocessed.
SULO offers a complete range of containers specifically designed to collect organic waste from the kitchen to the kerbside:
SULO Kitchen Tidy - Available in both an aerated and enclosed option, it fits neatly into any kitchen and provides residents with a neat and tidy method of food waste disposal.
Cardia Compostable Bags - fully compostable bags designed to be used in conjunction with the SULO Kitchen Tidy
SOCS - SULO Organics Collection System, a 140 or 240 litre wheele bin fitted with up to 8 separate air vents and a base plate, utilises natural aeration to reduce the contents of your MGB. |
