Recycling Services

SULO Recycling Services

Through the addition of an operation dedicated to the recycling of plastic containers, SULO Recycling Services, SULO is able to conserve valuable resources by taking back old, damaged or used bins, recycling them and using them in the manufacture of new wheelie bins. SULO sells the wheelie bins and when they are no longer in use, offers customers the opportunity to sell them back. Through the purchasing back of used bins, SULO is able to offer customers a complete service from the beginning right to the end of the bins life cycle, so old bins will no longer end up in landfill.

The old containers are put through a detailed grinding and cleaning process to ensure the material is ready to be re-used. They are firstly placed into a grinding machine and broken up into small chips and then transported to a washing tank, where the material is put through a two-stage washing cycle and spin dried. The plastic material is then automatically transferred into a machine that heats it to melting point and stretches the material into long, thin strands which are chopped into pellet size, ready to be used in the making of a new bin.  Instead of being unfriendly to the environment and taking up space in landfill, the material can be put to better use by reprocessing it into a new MGB.

What’s in your bin?

A standard MGB is made up of several different plastic materials including new plastic and recycled plastic. Each bin comprises of virgin raw material, making up the majority of the plastic used to ensure a strong and durable wheelie bin. A small amount of Master Batch is used to colour a bin and only a teaspoon is needed as it is a very concentrated colourant. The material recovered from SULO Recycling Services is referred to as recycled HPDE and can contribute up to 30% of the total material used. Other recycled material such as reprocessed milk bottles and shampoo containers can also be used to increase the recycled content of an MGB. The materials used in the manufacture of an MGB are shown below.
